It’s that season once again. Midterm break has passed, and May 13 is fast approaching. The next month-and-a-half will fly by, taking seniors’ Spring Weekend and Senior Week with it. Before we know it, seniors, it’ll be May 14, and we will be college graduates.
But what’s next?
Take a week off to enjoy the summer, and then what? Do you have a job lined up? Me neither. But there’s hope.
National statistics are generally reassuring for 2012 graduates, according to U.S. News and World Report, which reported last week that hiring managers plan to hire 9.5 percent more new college graduates this year than they did in 2010 and 2011.
The March 21 article also stated unemployment among college graduates has been declining in recent years. In just one year, the unemployment rate for graduates with bachelor’s degrees has dropped from 4.4 percent to 4.2 percent. The difference may seem insignificant, but in a post-recession eco-nomy, a decrease of this kind is a wonderful thing. And hiring is projected to increase for graduates of all majors, especially business, computer science and engineering.
Go ahead, seniors. Breathe a little sigh of relief. But don’t get too comfortable.
A decrease in unemployment and promising plans among companies to hire graduates does not necessarily mean there are plenty of jobs to go around, according the article. The pressure is only easing slightly, not disappearing altogether.
So start the job search now, if you haven’t already. Polish up your LinkedIn profile, start reaching out to the epic Bona’s alumni network and book an appointment with the Career and Professional Readiness Center (CPRC).
It looks as though the class of 2012 has paid its recession-time dues and caught a break. But let’s not waste it. Take advantage of this Bonaventure education, and get to work, seniors!
