The 12th seeded women’s tennis team (11-9) fell to fifth-seeded Xavier last Thursday, 4-0, at the Atlantic 10 Championships in
Charlottesville, Va.

The doubles pairing of senior Manuela Marin-Salcedo and Fatya Amiri lost 8-0. The team of sophomore Andrea Pavlovic and junior Riley Archer los, 8-2, while freshman Marissa Brossard and junior Kathryn Kvas were down 5-3 when their match was abandoned.

In singles action, Marin-Salcedo lost 6-3, 6-0. Pavlovic fell in her match 6-1, 6-0, with Archer down by the same score. In singles matches that were abandoned mid-play, after winning the first set 6-4, Amiri was down 3-0 in the second set. Kvas was ahead 1-0 in the second set after claiming the first 7-5, while Brossard was down 0-1 after losing 7-5.

Matches are played in a best-of-seven format, with each win being worth four points. In championship play, however, once one team reaches four match wins, all matches still in play are abandoned.

Junior Amanda Pallikunnel, one-half of the Bonnies first doubles team, did not play as a result of a torn ACL she sustained in the
team’s last regular season match against Niagara.

‘The only player coach Mike Bates loses to graduation this May is Marin-Salcedo. She finished her career as a Bonnie with a 23-1 record. Next year’s squad is set to be headed by current freshman Amiri, who led the team this season in victories (27,) and, along with Marin-Salcedo, set a team-high-tying 14 victories in doubles.

In the rest of tournament play, Xavier advanced to the quarterfinal to face fourth-seeded Temple. The Owls won 4-0. Temple advanced and lost to top seed Massachusetts, which advanced to play No. 3 seed Richmond in the championship round. The Spiders pulled off the upset with a 4-3 victory.
