On Sept. 23, the stars aligned for the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Celebrities graced the red carpet, donning bright colors, prints, shimmer and some not-so-hot ensembles. Here are my picks for the best and worst dressed at the awards.

The fashion misses of the night:

5. Julianna Margulies – “The Good Wife”

Margulies’ Giambattista Valli dress did not impress. The floral print gown’s bodice hugged the star nicely, but the skirt provided an unflattering shape on the gorgeous Margulies. The print resembled a tablecloth to be laid out for Thanksgiving dinner.

4. January Jones – “Mad Men”

The usually prim and proper “Mad Men” starlet turned to a dark and medieval look. Sporting a Zac Posen gown, the beauty arrived in an all black look from head to toe. Rather than the skirt adding an avant-garde vibe, it appeared more like a slinky parading down the carpet.

3. Zosia Mamet – “Girls”

Star of HBO’s “Girls,” Zosia Mamet wore a black and white Bibhu frock. For someone in her early twenties, the star appeared matronly behind the lens. With her hair slicked back and her lightly made-up face, this getup gave the actress an aged look.

2. Ashley Judd – “Missing”

Judd arrived on the carpet in a Carolina Herrara raspberry-colored halter gown. The fishtail hemline and bouffant hairstyle did not do any justice to Judd’s beautiful features. Her look screamed “I Dream of Genie” instead of Emmy-nominated actress.

And taking the top spot for worst dressed…

1. Lena Dunham – “Girls”

Dunham, who was nominated for four awards at the event, wore a lace, high-waisted dress. The rising star delivered a fierce smoky eye, as well as a pixie-style haircut. However, the bland style of her attire did not provide much excitement. The look was far from appropriate for the festive night.

Now onto the best red carpet looks:

5. Max Greenfield – “New Girl”

It is not easy to rock a bow tie, yet Greenfield proved this accessory can be stylish. He came close to perfection in his Brooks Brothers tailored suit. Greenfield’s hair brought the outfit all together. Need I say more?

4. Tina Fey – “30 Rock”

The 42-year-old comedic genius was flawless in a Vivienne Westwood gown. The round neckline, plum-colored, fitted dress was nothing short of stunning.  Forget “30 Rock,” she was a gem on the carpet.

3. Padma Lakshmi – “Top Chef”

Orange is sure to be the most popular color of fall 2012. Lakshmi did justice to the color’s pleasing aesthetic. In a Monique Lhuillier strapless trumpet gown, the “Top Chef” host brought simplicity and elegance together in this beautiful tangerine dress.

2. Kerry Washington –  presenter

Washington shined while strutting in her Vivienne Westwood gown. The rose gold glimmer dress was a great contrast with her gorgeous skin tone. She lit up the carpet.

Drum roll please, for the person who snagged the coveted best dressed award…

1. Ginnifer Goodwin – “Once Upon a Time”

The “Once Upon a Time” actress was magical from head to toe. Her pixie crop, light makeup and bronze jewelry was simple, yet dramatic. The orange detail in the Monqiue Lhullier gown was just enough to stand out. The skirt, shorter in the front and longer in the back (otherwise known as the “mullet dress”), was paired with a matching orange heel. If J. Crew unveiled a line of awards ceremony gowns, this would be the first dress to be sold. Goodwin was by far the most impressive of the night.

Many stars delivered on the night of the Emmy Awards ceremony. Although there were hits and misses, each celebrity made a statement sure to be noticed by aspiring fashionistas all over.
