The St. Bonaventure men’s swimming and diving team travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers in their first dual meet tomorrow.
“We want to continue to improve,”said Coach Sean McNamee said. “To show a continual path of improvement is the main goal.”
McNamee said the team has been training hard to improve themselves.
“We have some things we need to work on, but that’s what you expect at this time of the season,” McNamee said. “Just mechanical stuff, mainly. We have some freshmen newcomers getting indoctrinated into college swimming.”
McNamee thinks the SBU stands a good chance against Pitt, since it will be their first home meet.
“We can be competitive in a number of events,” he said. “We’ll go in with some work on what they have. We know their strengths and we know their weaknesses. We’re going to try and swim in tired conditions.”
Diving starts at 11 a.m. and swimming begins at noon.
Last weekend the team competed in the Western New York Invitational against Canisius, Niagara and Buffalo. McNamee said the team did well and that it was good for them to finally be able to race outside of practice.
Junior James Martin finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, second in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke and third in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Vatslav Lets took second in the 200-yard backstroke and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly.
Senior diver Mike Murphy finished first in both the 3-meter and 1-meter dives with scores of 317.45 and 299.60, respectively.
“It’s a difficult format and we have kids swimming a multitude of events,” McNamee said. “We saw some very good things.”
