When an opposing team enters the Reilly Center for a battle with the Bonnies, it will almost certainly be met with a deafening roar from the WolfPack.
Whether unleashing a Bona clap or a loud cry of “Defense,” the student section on game day is loud, rowdy and ready to support the Bonnies. And it’s about time the WolfPack gets the recognition it deserves.
Of course, that all depends on students and alumni putting in that extra click a day online to ensure the WolfPack wins the 2013 Naismith Student Section of the Year award. For a chance at national recognition, it seems like more than a fair trade.
Through the contest’s “I Love College Hoops” page on Facebook, members of the WolfPack can simply click and vote for the best section in the land.
It sounds easy. In reality it’s even easier, as you don’t even need a Facebook to participate. This means even students and alumni wh0 may not have a Facebook profile still have a chance to vote.
“You can vote using either the ‘Connect with Facebook’ icon, or enter your name, email address and age and click the ‘Register’ button,” according to a Jan. 29 SBU News email sent out to the Bonaventure community.
According to the official contest rules, Phase I voting officially ends Feb. 6. At that point, the 16 student sections with the most votes move on to Phase II for a shot at the grand prize of $10,000 toward the school’s scholarship fund and the official Naismith plaque.
There’s also a potential for a lesser prize of $250 for winners of the 29 major conferences, but that’s merely a fallback. Students should be clicking and sharing their way to a WolfPack grand prize victory.
It takes a few seconds, and it will benefit St. Bonaventure and its community. Many students are already on Facebook, so participating shouldn’t be a question.
Participants can submit once a day until Feb. 6, and then Bonaventure will move on to the next round of voting on Feb. 8 to the 22 if the WolfPack makes the Top 16.
Excluding extraordinary circumstances, there is no excuse not to participate. Why wouldn’t the WolfPack want to? It’s a prime chance to win some national recognition for the student section that inspires terror in those who would challenge the Bonnies.
At press time, the Bonnies hold the number 10 spot in the rankings, according to the Facebook page. The WolfPack is already making a national impact and there’s no doubt students and alumni can keep it up.
While there’s some scholarship money to be won, the most important thing at stake is the Naismith plaque and the bragging rights that come with it.
It means a year of credibility as the best student section in the nation. That’s nothing less than the WolfPack deserves.
Go Bonnies!
