The office of Student Life at St. Bonaventure is initiating a campus-wide campaign to raise awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs through Life: It’s Up to You.

The objective of this campaign is to decrease the percentage of alcohol and drug incidents on campus by 15 percent over the next year. The results will be measured throughout the year by student surveys, an analysis of emergency calls from campus and student code of conduct judicial referrals, according the campaign objective.

Life: It’s Up to You will be sponsored by the six offices of Student Life. Each office will host an activity before the end of April that students can attend in order to be included in a drawing for an iPad mini. Students who attend an event will receive a tile that will act as their deposit. The more tiles you earn from attending, the more chances you have to win.

Rick Trietley, vice provost for student life, said students have the chance to get excited about getting involved and attending the events the offices of Student Life created.

An etiquette dinner hosted by the Career and Professional Readiness Center on March 19 will be the first event students can attend to be entered into the drawing for the grand prize, according to the official schedule of events.

“Any student life page on the university website has a link to the Life: It’s Up to You campaign,” Michael Blankenship, a graduate student in the integrated marketing communication program and head of marketing for Life: It’s Up to You, said. “Students can also visit the website to learn more about student life to make students aware of more responsible decisions before attending the activities.”

There will also be posters with QR codes around campus that students can scan with their smartphones to earn their first student life tile that enters their names into the contest for the iPad mini automatically, according to Blankenship.

“Each tile must be filled out after every event or activity and the student will be entered into the contest,” Blankenship said. “The winner will be chosen through a random drawing. The more events you attend, the more your name will be entered to win.”

Other activities and events offered include a workshop for healthy relationships and a prescription drug abuse discussion.

“In jumpstarting this contest, Student Life is hoping to encourage students to take control of their decisions so that they can act responsibly,” Trietley said.

Students who take part in any of these events or activities will have the chance to learn about their independence and how to transition into college life with responsibility, according to Trietley.
