Seven building phones are now blue light phones after Safety and Security modified them earlier this year.
Safety and Security modified the phones to incorporate the blue light features so they would be more identifiable for emergency use, according to Vito Czyz, director of the Office of Safety and Security.
“When you press the red button or pick up a phone, it immediately dials into Security and you state the details of the emergency,” Czyz said. “We also know exactly where the call is coming from and can send assistance immediately.”
In addition to the seven mounted blue lights, there are also four free-standing lights, three of which are located on the west side of campus and one on Clare Road. The free-standing ones are built a little differently, according to Czyz.
“The free-standing ones are mounted on a pole and the phone is built into the pole with a blue light on top,” he said. “The building-mounted ones contain a red emergency button to push and a speaker system. They are physically mounted to the buildings.”
A blue light phone has not been used for an actual emergency situation since Czyz began in January 2010, he said.
