The men’s rugby team will open its season tomorrow at the pitch behind McGraw-Jennings Field against Wheeling Jesuit University in what can be expected to be a lively scrimmage.
The last match between the two clubs, played this past April, ended in a dramatic fashion as Wheeling gave up the lead after kicking the ball out of bounds on the final drive. The Bonnies capitalized and took a 22-19 win in the final moments of the match.
“WJU will definitely be looking to avenge their loss to us last spring,” senior prop Kyle Jose said. “I expect a close, hard-fought game between two good teams.”
Playing for the Bonnies’ last game against Wheeling, former player Joshua Pfau agreed the Bonnies are ready for a hard match on Saturday.
“I can tell you that this game is going to be intense,” Pfau said. The Bonnies have lost some crucial leaders from last year. It will be a test to see if they can come together and play to their full potential.”
Regardless of the losses, the Bonnies are focused and ready to take on Wheeling with a good core of players and sound coaching.
“Our coaches know how WJU plays and have been tweaking our game plan in ways they believe will be effective against them,” junior left wing John Sullivan said.
Aside from the few changes to the game plan, the Bonnies have been preparing just as they would for any team – live action practice.
“Our whole team and coaching staff are extremely excited for the chance to scrimmage this team as a season opener at home,” Sullivan said. “I think all the guys, myself included, are just ready to get back out there and play some rugby.”
The Bonnies are confident and motivated to take on a hard opponent like Wheeling and will showcase their talent this weekend in what promises to be an exciting game.
