The St. Bonaventure softball team will sponsor the third-annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk for a Cure Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The walk will take place on the Allegheny River Valley Trail and start on the west end of campus near the tennis courts.
The softball team has a close connection to the JDRF Walk for a Cure, according to Mariela Ferrer, a sophomore journalism and mass communication major.
“The team has sponsored JDRF for a while now,” Ferrer said. “It’s a cause that has a lot of significance to our coach’s family, so we like to support them in any way that we can.”
A new component to the annual walk is the addition of a home run derby at the softball field, which will begin at 3 p.m. and end at 6 p.m. Any students can come to the field to compete and purchase 10 swings for $2. The winner will receive a $25 gift card to the Sports Locker in Olean, according to Ferrer.
According to Ferrer, all donations collected at the walk will help with further research on diabetes.
“The team is hoping to raise more than $2,000 this year,” Ferrer said. “With the support of the Bonaventure community and the local community, we are confident in reaching this goal.”
Although participation in the walk is free, if students donated a dollar each, that would help the team toward it’s goal, according to Katie Sinclair, a sophomore marketing major.
Ferrer said if all students contribute, the end result will help to benefit this cause.
“The team doesn’t expect students to donate hundreds of dollars, but even the smallest amount helps,” Ferrer said. “We just want to spread awareness of juvenile diabetes in a fun, light-hearted way.”
