Halloween is just around the corner, and things are starting to get spooky at Bonaventure. Several buildings on campus are decked out with scary decorations, from spider webs in the hallways of Loughlen Hall to cauldrons and pumpkins in the Hickey. Last weekend, Halloween events on campus kicked off with pumpkin painting in the Rathskeller.
Although Halloween is not until the end of next week, some students have already begun trying on costumes to scare fellow Bonnies. For the freshmen on campus, it will be the first Halloween away from home, and many are excited to try something new and exciting.
Two freshmen, roommates Alexis Young and Vanessa Hulse, said they are fueled with excitement for the spooky holiday and have been for some time. Their dorm has been decorated for weeks, and their Halloween costumes are already laid out and ready to wear.
“We went to Walmart and bought a ton of decorations to hang up in our room,” said Hulse, a chemistry major. “Some have fallen down, but we will make sure they are up and ready for the big day.”
“I fully intend to trick-or-treat in downtown Olean,” said Young, a biology major. “I believe I am short enough to pass as a kid!”
The true reason why Hulse and Young enjoy Halloween is the concept of free candy.
“Who doesn’t like free candy?” Young said. “My mom sent me some, and I’ve already eaten most of it.”
Hulse agreed and pointed out some of the candy she’s most excited to have.
“I am really looking forward to some Airheads,” she said. “And some Rolos. And Milky Way. Just about every kind!”
“It was a tradition for my family to always hand make our costumes. Half the fun was buying the material and seeing how well the outfit turned out,” Miller said. “One of my favorite years was when I wanted to be a spider. My family shopped at Goodwill and put together this really creative costume.”
Junior sociology major Emily LoBello also said she has fond memories of Halloween from her childhood.
“When I was a kid, all the students in my elementary school would participate in a Halloween parade dressed in our costumes,” LoBello said. “To me, that was always exciting. Of course, I also dressed up and went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood.”
LoBello, the resident assistant on fourth Loughlen, decided along with a couple of her residents, to decorate the hallway in the spirit of Halloween.
“A couple of the girls and I woke up at about 5 a.m. to decorate as a surprise to everyone,” she said. “It was a lot of fun because I really enjoy getting excited for any holiday.”
LoBello said she’s been actively trying to spread the Halloween spirit to residents on her floor.
“I’ve planned a floor program for the girls on my floor for the day before Halloween to get everyone in the mood,” she said. “We’re going to have a great time!”
Miller said one of the reasons she loves Halloween so much is because there are so many things to do. She plans to create a mix of her childhood memories with some new ideas to have fun come next Thursday.
“Halloween is my favorite holiday,” she said. “I’m super excited!”
