Many greetings and welcome to a new edition of The Bona Venture. I’m excited for the chance to lead a crew of excellent student journalists as we strive to make this paper a well-respected and well-crafted source for all things Bonaventure.
As you’ll notice, we’ve already made some changes from previous editions. As of late last year, the opinion section now runs a single page, with a goal to keep the topics as relevant to Bonaventure and the surrounding community as possible. I hope to see this section become a forum for all students, faculty and community members to have their voices and ideas heard.
We’re also making a stronger effort to expand the scope of our news section and our reporting. Rather than having the section be a place for school officials to drop off press releases and expect coverage, we’re actively pursuing stories you won’t find in the formal announcements on sbu.edu. With that, we also strive to keep the news section relevant to a wider demographic of students across all academic disciplines.
We’re also introducing exciting new features, adding an advice column, expanding our social media presence and increasing online content. Meanwhile, we’re expanding our recruitment push to gather new writers to bring fresh perspectives and new storytelling to our paper and increasing the involvement of our veteran writers.
Speaking personally, I’ve never been more excited to work with a group of people in my life. Our writers, editors and photographers are among the most hardworking and dedicated folks I’ve ever had the pleasure to encounter, and I’m confident they’ll put out a product that adequately reflects the long hours, multiple edits and gratuitous coffee consumption that goes into creating each issue.
Our challenge lies in creating a newspaper that is not only worth reading but worth discussing. With this staff, I’m confident we at The Bona Venture will exceed the standards of our audience and create an indispensable source for Bonaventure news.
