The infamous “Polar Vortex” has been barreling through the northeastern part of the United States over the past few days, and Bonaventure has certainly seen the backlash of this grisley weather. The accumulation of snow and ice as a result of the storm are apparent as you walk around campus, especially near the Townhouse and Garden apartments.
For many students on the West Side of campus, driving isn’t an issue simply because living closer to academic buildings renders a car somewhat unnecessary. However, students living on the East Side of campus have been forced to battle built-up snow and ice in the parking lots near their buildings for some time now.
Over the past few weekends, Bonaventure has seen several inches of precipitation with lows in the mid-teens, according to weather.com. The rain and snow mixed with cold air also made way for slick pavement. Despite the rough driving conditions that arose as a result of the storm, parking lots on the East Side of campus remained unplowed and unsalted, which gave students difficulty when exiting the lots.
Maintenance needs to ensure that all roads on campus, especially parking lots, are properly and promptly plowed and salted whenever inclement weather bursts through the Bona Bubble. Failure to do so not only causes students flurries of frustration, it also poses a number of dangers to everyone on campus roads. Additionally, unplowed parking lots mean students have to dig their cars out of the snow in the morning before they head to class.
It’s no secret snow falls every winter in Western New York, so it’s without question the school has policies and procedures in place to combat the harsh conditions brought about by the weather.
