Use your head; wear a Hat

Hi all, and welcome to this week’s Fashion Focus. I will be talking about my all-time favorite accessory, hats. I’m sure you’re all well aware of the Arctic weather; it is important we stay warm and conserve heat. I am not used to these negative temperatures. However, I have learned that you can conserve your body heat by wearing one simple little accessory. Yes, you’ve guessed it: a hat.

Wearing a hat is perfectly fine and I am a huge advocate for the hat lifestyle. I love wearing hats, no matter the weather. If I find the opportunity to wear a cute little hat, I will. Researching a little bit about the history of hats, I discovered the first hat to be worn was by a man – a simple skull hat was worn by Greek and Roman men when they were freed from slavery. The hat was labelled “the liberty cap.” Toward the end of the 16th century, hats became popular among upper class ladies. Over the centuries, hats were worn for many purposes: to display status, to protect the head, for warmth and as part of uniforms. However to me, a hat adds a little extra touch to finish an outfit. Therefore it’s important to choose your hats wisely.

I know not everyone loves hats as much as I do. Girls especially will avoid wearing hats because they feel it highlights their not so desired features – perhaps making their ears stick out, or making them look manly. However there are so many hats out there, that if you follow some simple guidelines it’s simple to find one.

As soon as October hit, I rushed out to the shops to add to my extensive collection of hats. It is important to choose hats that fit your head and aren’t too tight or too big. Choose a color and style you can wear comfortably. Of course, you must own at least one hat that has a great big bobble on top.

If you have a small face, choose a small hat. Beanies are perfect, for they won’t cover your entire face.  Instead, you’ll look cute and keep your head and ears warm. On the contrary, if you have a larger face, choose a bigger, more dramatic style. Brimmed hats are perfect for that. Avoid small hats, as they will only make your face look bigger. If you have a long face, choose a hat that covers your forehead. Peaked or floppy hats will perfectly proportion your face. For round faces, it is important to choose a hat that is narrow and sits around the crown of your head, such as fedoras. If you have a fringe and aren’t sure which hat will compliment your bangs, choose a French beret or a bobbled beanie.
