The St. Bonaventure women’s swim team has a busy week as they swim against a pair of local rivals.
The Bonnies took on Buffalo Wednesday in the Reilly Center Pool and ultimately fell by a score of 164-114. They swim at Niagara Saturday.
Head Coach Seth Johnson knows it’s always a little bit more competitive when the Bonnies take on Big 4 rivals in athletics, no matter what the sport.
“You have got the Little 3 and the Big 4 with Canisius, Niagara, and UB, and we have been able to cultivate those rivalries in all sports, so it’s always nice to beat those teams.”
Headed into the Buffalo meet, Johnson said he expected a tough match up.
“UB is very, very strong. They are very good, so it will be a tough meet,” Johnson. “We will be able to swim a few events that we haven’t been able to swim in our pool. This is really maybe not even our best line up but getting people swims that they need to get in before A-10s.”
It’s rare for the Brown and White to compete twice in one week. Johnson said that doesn’t affect the preparation process too much.
“To be honest, this time of year our meets are a good time to get up and race, but in terms of preparation, we’re four weeks out of our championship meet and all our preparation is focused on that” Johnson said.
Even with rivalry meets on the horizon this week, the focus remains on getting conditioned for A-10s at the end of the season.
“Do we want to win them? Yeah. Do we put our best line ups forward to win them? Yeah. But it’s not like we’re sacrificing the end goal of A-10s for a dual meet,” Johnson said.
