The challenge continues as Recyclemania returns to Bonaventure for another year. The campaign kicked off on Sunday and ends Monday, March 31. Various recycling containers and informational posters across campus have been stamped with the nature-friendly green Bona Wolf.
The goal of Recyclemania is to recycle 25 percent of plastic or reusable waste materials on campus. It also presents the opportunity for students, faculty and the community to learn about the importance of separating trash and helping the environment.
SBU Tread Lightly, the campus environmental group, has created a tree decorated with pledge leaves that students can sign. Those who sign pledge to make a conscious effort to recycle.
Several students shared how they feel about Recyclemania and what it will do for the campus. One student, Gabriella Tovar, wasn’t aware of the project at first but is now an active participant.
“I actually didn’t know about this project until I got an email about it and read in the newsletter,” Tovar, a sophomore journalism and mass communication major said. “I think it’s great for the school to promote recycling. Recyclemania is something I can take part in to make a big difference even if it’s just one little thing.”
Tovar said she hopes Recyclemania can change her outlook on being green.
“I don’t really consider myself an environmentally conscious person, I just try to recycle when I can,” Tovar said.
Another student who is looking forward to the success of the project is junior journalism and mass communication major Dariana Bera. She believes recycling is both essential and important.
“It means better living and us giving back to Mother Earth by keeping her as clean as possible,” Bera said. “The earth in many ways is our creator with the help of the sun and stars. So we owe it to her to cater and invest in her health.”
Bera said she went green a long time ago and she hopes this will make others aware.
“I am environmentally conscious,” she said. “The school is filled with recycling bins, and in my house, my dad makes us separate the plastics and glass.”
Anastasia Hernandez, a junior sociology major, said she believes it’s important to save the planet by keeping it green and reviving the environment in every way possible
“It makes me upset because commercials show us how important recycling is and animals end up dying by the garbage that people lay around,” Hernandez said. “It’s a huge problem when people don’t recycle.”
