Red Alert: Red Dress Week

Hi everyone, and welcome to this week’s Fashion Focus. I would like to address an up-and-coming event I have been reading about on social media. The American Heart Association’s (AHA) “National Wear Red Day” is today. This campaign was launched by the AHA in light of research that displayed women as the most frequent victims of heart disease. Previously, heart disease had been labeled as an “old man’s” illness. However, it has been proven that more women suffer from heart related illness than men each year. Heart disease is recorded as the number-one killer in women, taking more than one thousand female lives every day. The AHA has described this disease as a “silent killer.” This year will be the 10th anniversary of the “National Wear Red Day,” celebrated on the first Friday of February every year. The aim of the campaign is to encourage the general public to wear red with the purpose of supporting women who have suffered from heart related illnesses, as well as raise awareness, promote healthy living and prevent heart disease in women.

I think this is an amazing idea. I love to wear red for any occasion, but to know that you are advocating for a great cause is an amazing feeling in itself. I had never heard about this campaign until this week when I noticed a poster in the library. We are having our very own wear red event on campus. Rather than it being one day, it will take place for several days. On campus, VOICES, a club devoted to women’s issues, is honoring the “National Wear Red Day” by holding its own “Red Dress Week” from Feb. 10-15. Members from VOICES will have a table in the Reilly Center during this week from 10-3 p.m., selling hearts that can be bought and dedicated to the people of your choice. On Saturday there will also be a kissing booth and a dance at 8 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come and wear something red.

There are some really lovely red dresses that are in style at the minute. I particularly like the first one. It’s simple but has a beautiful shape, and it’s strapless which means it needs a statement necklace, my favorite accessory. It’s important to not overdo the red dress. A simple dress is perfect. It’s always nice to balance out the plain with a patterned pair of fun shoes.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and hope you get involved in the Go Red activities.
