Students should be wary of rumors on social media

Social media has recently been abuzz regarding the sobriety status of Spring Weekend, which begins Friday, April 25. Rumors about an absolutely dry campus have dominated newsfeeds and timelines for the past several weeks. But students need to wait until they have correct facts and information before they make unwarranted and unsubstantiated remarks on the Internet. This only feeds into drama and confusion.

According to Nichole Gonzalez, executive director of residential living and chief judicial officer, there is no change in the alcohol policy as outlined in St. Bonaventure’s Student Code of Conduct during Spring Weekend, and Spring Weekend policies are no different than those enforced throughout the rest of the school year.

“There has never been alcohol permitted in public areas, and that is no different on Spring Weekend,” Gonzalez said. “No, we will not be a dry campus. We never are.”

Spring Weekend should be a time of fun and celebration for Bonnies, but that doesn’t mean students should disrespect the university with belligerent behavior. Gonzalez said the offices of student affairs are looking into increasing security measures simply because of the increase in unsafe conduct during the weekend festivities.

“There is a strong likelihood there may be additional security and possibly small police presence during certain high-traffic times,” she said. “There is a lot of risky behavior that weekend, and all we want to do is make sure students are being safe.”

While it’s easy for people to make remarks on social media about potential situations, it is way more important to take the time do a little investigating before sending other Bonnies abuzz with confusion.
