Tennis teams earn weekend victories

Four St. Bonaventure men’s tennis players won a single and doubles match, leading the Bonnies to a 6-1 win at Loyola University Maryland on Sunday. Junior Marisa Brossard and freshman Mara Martinez-Santori won two singles and a doubles match, leading SBU’s women’s tennis team last weekend in Saturday’s win at Navy and Sunday’s loss at Loyola (Md.).

The women’s team (5-9, 0-2) hosts the Binghamton Bearcats today at 1 p.m. at the SBU Fitness Center in Olean.

The men’s team (4-13, 0-3) won its second straight match Sunday after beating Roberts Wesleyan on March 15. Senior Elliott Fanshel defeated Connor Pietrak, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in first singles and classmate Ramazan Nureev bested Connor Lisco, 6-3, 7-5, in third singles. The seniors joined together in first doubles for an 8-5 victory over Lisco and Harrison Kunkel.

Sophomore Eduardo Irizarry defeated Kunkel, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, in second singles and senior Javier Ortiz dominated fourth singles, beating Greg Olesnycky, 6-3, 6-2. Irizarry and Ortiz teamed up in second doubles, winning 8-5 over Olesnycky and Jordan Kuchta. Sophomore Celso de Vera Rehberger topped Kuchta, 6-4, 7-6, in fifth singles.

The women’s team defeated the Midshipmen, 4-3, despite losing all three doubles matches. All four Bonnies singles winners won in straight sets. Brossard defeated Audrey Channell, 6-4, 6-1, in first singles.

Junior Fatya Amiri won a second-set tiebreaker to beat Cassandra Fisbeck, 6-2, 7-6 (2), in second singles. Martinez-Santori dominated, 6-0, 6-2, in her thirds singles win over Vivian Chau. Freshman Mariam Skhirtladze defeated Rozel Hernandez, 7-6, 7-6, in fourth singles.

The Greyhounds defeated the Bonnies, 4-3, with two wins in doubles and three wins in singles. Brossard won in first singles, 7-6, 8-6, 6-1, over Megan Hahn. Martinez-Santori captured thirds singles with a 6-2, 6-1, win against Katelyn Hissong.

Brossard and Martinez-Santori teamed up for an 8-5 first doubles victory over Hahn and Olivia Ott. Skhirtladze defeated Ania Krawiec, 6-3, 7-6, in fourth singles.

The men’s team will have this weekend off before hosting La Salle and Youngstown State on April 5 and 6.
