This past Wednesday, the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts filled with music as the SBU Jazz Band put on their spring concert. The 17-person ensemble produced a lively and professional sound as it made its way through its set.
The band, directed by Leslie Sabina, performed 11 songs, including the crowd-pleasing “Theme from ‘Family Guy,’” which sounded as though it was straight from the TV show’s soundtrack. Three songs composed by Sabina himself also made the set list, including “Brouhaha,” which consisted of several popular jazz themes including “Gig Bag,” and “Seismic Strut.” Sabina’s three compositions were highlights of the show, and the band performed them wonderfully. The band also performed well-known songs including “Watermelon Man,” by Herbie Hancock and “In The Mood,” by Joe Garland.
This concert signaled the end for several longtime band members, including senior chemistry major and saxophonist Nick Turgeon, who Sabina gave a special shout out to during the concert. Turgeon has been involved with the jazz band since his freshman year. Other seniors involved were chemistry major Kateri Anderson on bass and political science major Stephen Melchiorre on saxophone.
Overall, the concert was enjoyable and filled with music that had the audience dancing in their seats. Sabina did a wonderful job directing his talented students in some of the more difficult numbers, and the audience received them with warm applause.
