Hello! My name is Lauren Zazzara. I am a sophomore journalism and mass communication major. For years, fashion has made more sense to me than anything else. It is the subject that I can talk about forever and I am excited to be able to write the fashion column for The Bona Venture this year! This week I would like to share with you some of my perspective on what fashion is all about. Dressing well can give you better grades.
That might be a bit of a stretch, but nothing makes me feel more motivated than putting on an outfit I love. It makes me want to get everything I need to get done completed. It makes me confident that I can handle anybody and anything. Fashion is a creative outlet that, unlike most artistic pursuits, everyone can get involved in. We all have to wear clothes. Why not enjoy it and have fun with it?
College students have the reputation of wearing sweats all the time. When you have an 8:30 class on Monday morning, you usually want to pretend you are still in bed by throwing on something as comfortable as pajamas. However, it’s easy to pick out your outfit the night before. Go on Pinterest and find some inspiration. Stand in front of your closet until the fashion muses guide your hand to the clothes that will create an outfit that will keep all eyes on you. Put it on the edge of your bed so that in the morning all you have to do is throw it on. Now you have no excuse for wearing pajamas to class!
First impressions are important, as all of your professors will tell you. Of course it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but people are easily swayed by what they see at first glance. Clothes are an easy way to show the world who you are. If you are shy, like I am, you can use your clothes to express yourself without saying a word.
Many people think it is about money. It doesn’t have to be. I get a lot of my clothes from thrift stores, often under five dollars a piece. Then, because I do not spend too much, I’m not afraid to try personalizing those items by distressing shorts or cutting sleeves off shirts. When you put your touch on what you are wearing, that outfit can’t be replicated. It is a reflection of you. And the best part is you don’t have to break the bank, because let’s face it, we’re broke college students.
So make this your most fashionable year yet. If you buy clothes, you might as well wear them. Olean may be slightly limited in its shopping opportunities, but we have a mall on North Union Street and some thrift stores. If you’d rather change up what you have, take some scissors, some studs and some lace and try a do-it-yourself project. Pair unexpected things together, and most importantly, don’t care what anyone else thinks. This is for you!
