New groups and clubs have been flourishing on campus with the start of the new school year.
As college students, academics should be the main focus. However, there is so much to learn outside of the classroom.
There are so many activities for Bonaventure students to take part in on campus. Whether it’s joining a sport team or doing volunteer work, with the variety of groups and clubs on campus, the words “I’m bored” should never be said by any student.
One of the new groups that can be found this semester is “Let’s talk about it.” The group was formed by Kerelle Caldwell, HEOP adviser and University 101 instructor. Caldwell saw the need for a group on campus that allows students to discuss a variety of issues in a safe environment. The discussions in this group aim to help college freshmen adapt to and better understand their new college environment.
“Students need a young person to help them through the transition of college in every aspect; not only academically but also professionally,” Caldwell said.
Caldwell plans on being the person who will help students have a smooth transition into college. She also expects students to reach out to the community.
“I hope that students will gain a sense of giving back to the community, and also be properly prepared for the real world,” Caldwell said.
With this new group, she hopes to highlight values that can’t be taught in the classroom.
Along with groups, club sports are also seeing some new additions. Courtney Newhouse, a sophomore business management major, decided to take on a leadership position when she decided to form the girls’ gymnastics team. During the spring semester of her freshman year, Newhouse formed a workout group which focused primarily on gymnastics.
“I’ve always had the heart for gymnastics and I thought that there were other people who did too – and there were,” Newhouse said.
Those interested in joining the “Let’s Talk about It” group can contact Kerelle Caldwell. And those interested in the gymnastics team, contact Courtney Newhouse.
With Newhouse’s persistence, the group has since come a long way and it is now an official club. She shared her passion for gymnastics with the team, and hopes that others who share the same passion will join the team.
“People who join the club do not have to have previous experience,” Newhouse said. “Just come and have fun.”
Newhouse has hopes of competing, but adds that those who are part of the club do not necessarily have to compete. With the large goals Newhouse has set, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the gymnastics club growing in popularity in upcoming years.
