The women’s rugby team is 2-0 after beating Niagara 51-0 last weekend and will take on Fredonia this weekend.
The team travels to Fredonia this Saturday to take on the Blue Devils at 11 a.m. Junior lock Carley Doyle said despite the large margin of victory last weekend, the team will still try to work on their field vision.
“In our next game, we’re looking to improve on reading the field better,” Doyle said. “With the experienced players on our team, I think we should be able to take advantage of more gaps and holes on the field.”
In the Niagara game, the Bonnies spent most of their time on offense, which means they did not spend very much time on the defensive side of the ball. Even though the team has posted two shut outs so far this season, Doyle said there is still room to improve defensively, especially when preparing for a team as good as Fredonia.
“This week, we have been focusing on defense,” Doyle said. “In our past two games, we’ve spent very little time on defense, so we want to be prepared for a team that is going to challenge us defensively.”
Doyle said Fredonia will be their hardest opponent this season, so the team has been prepping extra hard and will go into the game with confidence.
“This weekend will be our toughest game of the season, so we want to go into this game confident, but we are also staying focused,” Doyle said. “We’re anticipating a challenging game, and we’re very excited to see what we can do.”
The team continued their exceptional play last weekend at home with a big win over Niagara. Doyle said while it was nice to get a good win, the team is not dwelling in the past, so it is important to use the chemistry they have built and use it to keep their momentum going.
“The win was very exciting for us,” Doyle said. “We really worked together throughout the entire game, and every player was able to get their hands on the ball. We are developing great chemistry as a team as the season progresses.”
