Sportswear has been on runways for the past few years. From Gucci to Alexander Wang, designers are putting sport-inspired influences on many of their designs. Mesh in particular was popular this summer and can still be carried over into fall. In addition, varsity jackets, bright and fun high-tops, and baseball caps will still look cool. But keep in mind, you don’t want to include too many sporty elements in one outfit for fear of looking like you are stepping out on Halloween. Mix one statement piece with other simple elements of your wardrobe to look trendy yet balanced.
For the girls, I love mesh t-shirts. They look cool layered over bandeaus or bralettes in the summer, but since this look is not quite appropriate for school days, try layering one over a t-shirt of a different color to get a layered effect. Mesh shirts look great with mini-skirts and booties to add a girlish touch, or with a pair of skinny jeans and Converse to keep with the tomboy-vibe. Or, try a varsity jacket as a layering device. They look great over summer dresses or paired with sweaters and jeans. For accessories, trainers have been everywhere among the street-style world. Try a pair of bright high-tops with an otherwise neutral outfit to add a pop of color, or with a dress or skirt to keep your look unexpected. I love the way that snapbacks and baseball caps look on top of otherwise feminine ensembles.
For accessorizing these sporty outfits, try stacking on a few rings or bracelets. Don’t go overboard, because you want the focus to be on the sports element. I love how a statement necklace looks with a plain mesh top.
For the guys, baseball T-shirts are a comfortable way to indulge in the sportswear trend. You can also wear a varsity jacket over a simple T-shirt and jeans. Basketball-inspired high-tops are comfortable and warm, and baseball hats instantly add a sporty edge to any look. A solid colored slouchy sweatshirt can also give off an athletic vibe.
Both sexes can try jerseys or shirts with logos or numbers on them for a ‘90s inspired feel. Again, pair with simple elements like jeans or skirts so as to not overdo the trend.
