Happy almost Christmas break!

Of course, there are finals, final papers and final projects all crammed into one week.

But Christmastime is here!

While you are studying for hours on end, your mind may wander to the question “What am I going to wear for Christmas?” Even if it doesn’t, I’m going to give you my tips on what to choose for those awkward family holiday parties.

Christmas is the time for deep colors, metallics and sparkle. A Christmas outfit should reflect the special nature of the season. But it should also be modest enough to not scandalize your grandparents.

Just don’t over think your outfit. It’s more about having a good time with all your family and friends.

For girls, a dress or skirt is a good way to go (just make sure that they are long enough and thick enough). Choose one in a deep burgundy, rich brown or forest green. I am planning on wearing a brown velvet dress with cream textured tights and oxfords. Or, go the metallic route with something gold or silver. For example, try a gold sparkly skirt with an oversized black sweater, some sheer black stockings and heels.

Go all out with accessories. A statement necklace with lots of color will pop against an all-black or all-white outfit. Load on the rings. I personally like rich gold for the holidays. Go for the ring-stacking trend with some midi rings. Or, layer on a bunch of bracelets in different metals for an eclectic touch.

Guys should also try to stick to rich colors for Christmas. A pair of tan, brown or black corduroy pants would look great with a cozy patterned sweater. Or, choose a pair of black dress pants with a button-down and a festive tie (reindeer, Santa faces, snowflakes, there are lots of options). A pair of suede or leather dress shoes in navy, black or brown (or mix it up with silver or red) finish off the look.

For girls, New Year’s Eve is the time to try out a statement piece. Maybe you have that item in your closet that you love but you never thought you would have any place to wear it so you just stare at it longingly every morning. New Year’s Eve is the time to show that item to the public. A faux fur jacket or vest would look luxurious and chic. Or, try a white leather jacket. A sequined blazer looks great over a mini dress.

New Year’s Eve is also a good time to try a beauty trend that you have been interested in but too nervous to try. Deep purple lipstick? Swipe it on. A smoky eye? Layer up the eye shadows. Cat-eye eyeliner? Get your Q-tips ready to wipe up the mistakes. A New Year’s party is the time to go bold.

We get home a few weeks before Christmas. To get yourself into the Christmas spirit and make it last for as long as possible, try decorating your room. Candles are the perfect way to bring in a Christmas atmosphere. Try one in a pine or vanilla scent. String some Christmas lights over your window, hang a pinecone garland across your dressers or your headboard and put a wreath outside of your door. Find a Christmas station on Pandora or your mom’s Bing Crosby Christmas album to play when you are feeling the winter blues.

Go sledding and decorate your Christmas tree. Bake cookies with your grandma and play card games with all your cousins.

Christmas and the holiday season are truly the most wonderful times of the year. Get into the Christmas spirit to beyond-dorky levels and I hope that you and your families have great holidays.
