ENACTUS will host the Science of Magic event on March 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Allegany-Limestone Elementary School.
ENACTUS is a St. Bonaventure club that focuses on using entrepreneurial strategies to benefit the community.
The event is being held for a local fourth grader who is terminally ill with bone cancer.
His family has requested his name not be released to the press.
ENACTUS hopes to attract fans of science and magic as it delves into the wonders of both.
Carrie Meisenzahl, a junior marketing major and ENACTUS member, said the event is a day filled with curiosity and education, benefitting all the children at the elementary school.
“The main goal for the Science of Magic event is to take this little boy’s love for magic and make it available for his classmates to see,” Meisenzahl said. “We want to show the community a connection between science and magic. This way, the kids can learn in a fun, innovative way while celebrating our friend’s life.”
Mackenzie Linehan, a junior journalism and mass communication major and ENACTUS member, said the club wants to inspire awe in the children.
“We don’t want kids walking out of there without learning something cool,” Linehan said. “Science is magic after all, isn’t it?”
Meisenzahl said that the activities at the school will be a mixture of scientific experiments and magic shows.
“People can expect different stations with science experiments and demonstrations,” Meisenzahl said. “Some of these you can take home, and some will appear magical. At the event, we will also feature a few Bonaventure students who have some tricks up their sleeves.”
Linehan said the proceeds will mainly be used to cover the expenses of the event.
“The proceeds for fundraising will be going to the event itself. The money will go towards supplies needed, materials for experiments and food for the day,” Linehan said.
Meisenzahl added that any extra money raised will be donated to the child’s family.
“With any extra funds, we will be donating it to his family for medical bills,” Meisenzahl said. “Due to [his] condition, our main focus is to just make the actual event itself the best it could possibly be to make him the happiest he can be.”
If interested in being involved with this event, Meisenzahl and Linehan can be contacted at meisence12@bonaventure.edu and linehamr12@bonaventure.edu, respectively.
Donations can also be made at http://www.gofundme.com/n1svdg. Meisenzahl said anyone willing to help with the event is welcome to help.
“Students can get involved and help with this event by spreading the word for what we want to do to help this boy,” Meisenzahl said. “ENACTUS wants to show the community what St. Bonaventure can do for a good cause. We are a small school that can make a big difference in someone’s life. To help this event run smoothly, students can still sign up to help with the logistics, marketing, donations or day of event.”
