It’s that time of the semester again when students at St. Bonaventure are cramming for midterm exams. Before the upcoming weeklong break, many are rushing to study and complete any final assignments before they are able to relax and enjoy themselves.

According to Madeleine Feddern, a freshman elementary education major, finding the right study habits comes easily.

“Personally, I read over all of my notes and use Post-It’s to highlight key terms and phrases that I think will be useful,” Feddern said. “It is also very helpful to discuss class material with my fellow classmates.”

Some students said they find it effective to find their own personal place to study.

“My favorite places to study are either in Café La Verna or the Thomas Merton [Ministry] Center,” Feddern said. “Most people don’t know it, but the Thomas Merton [Ministry] Center is actually open 24 hours a day to students. It is a very peaceful and comfortable place to get work done.”

Many students also consider study rooms in their dorm buildings and the Friedsam Memorial Library to be among the best places to get work done, especially during a week of midterms, they said.

Students said they are hoping to get the best results possible out of these midterm tests for all of the hard work that they have put into this semester so far.

“I’m hoping to kill it,” Haylei John, a freshman international studies and Spanish major, said. “I want all A’s. This is my time to shine.”

The students may be the ones taking the actual tests, but the professors are just as involved with issuing the tests, reviewing previous material and giving out midterm grades. Regardless of how much work the students have, some instructors said they have just as much to do.

“Midterms for me are more work than I’d like, because it usually means that I’m spending most of my break correcting papers,” philosophy professor Anthony Murphy said. “But I think that they are necessary, because otherwise students wouldn’t be given an indication on how they are doing up to this point in the semester.”

After midterms, students will be able to see how they are doing in their classes overall. Some students will still have to take their midterms after returning from break.
