St. Bonaventure University appointed Nick J. Basso, who has served for 18 years with the New York City Police Department, as director of Safety and Security.

Rick Trietley, vice president of Student Affairs, announced Basso’s new position on March 16.  Basso will officially begin work as director on July 7.

He said his first priority is to get to know campus.

“Ultimately, my goals are to learn all I can about St. Bonaventure, to provide a safe environment for the entire community and to forge solid, cooperative relationships with those whom I serve, those I will lead and those to whom I am responsible,” Basso said.

Since 2008, Basso served as associate director of public safety at Union County College in Cranford, N.J.

“I have provided safety and security services for approximately 25,000 and 1,100 faculty and staff,” Basso said.  “I [was] responsible for operations, logistics, personnel and administrative services for my department of 45 uniformed officers, supervisor and non-uniformed personnel, and I [filled] the role as the department’s second in command.”

He also has 10 years of experience in operational supervision and administrative management with the New York City Police Department.

Basso served for four years in the United States Navy.  He earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Sea Service Award and the Expeditionary Medal for service in Lebanon.

Basso graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University, Staten Island, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

According to Basso, he learned of the position at Bonaventure via the International Association of College Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) website.

Basso said he is eager to start his new job.

“I generally take measured approaches to all of my major projects, and I consider this position as one of the greatest in my life,” Basso said.  “I expect to observe and learn a great deal from those in the department of Safety and Security, my new colleagues throughout the University, some of whom I have already had the pleasure of meeting, and the leaders of the institution. I look forward to meeting and learning what I can from the students of St. Bonaventure as well.”
