A senior art exhibit took place on April 24 in the San Damietta Room of Francis Hall. The show featured paintings, jewelry and sculptures created by seniors Meghan Ferrucci and Marc Peralta, who are both visual arts majors.

The exhibit showcased a range of designs and concepts, including three-dimensional pieces, spray-painted images and works of art on canvas. The show also featured slam poetry and a vocal performance.

Ferrucci said she started preparing for the show in January. From hand-chiseled soap to pieces of handmade jewelry, her presentations demonstrated her ability to craft designs across a diverse range of media.

“With every piece I did over the past three years, I kept my senior show in mind,” Ferrucci said. “It’s a long process, and with each assignment, I would think of how or if I wanted that to be a part of my final presentation.”

When it came to a theme for her exhibit, Ferrucci decided to focus on the relationship between nature and the human race.

“My inspirations came from flowers, which connect me to memories of various moments and people in my life,” Ferruci said. “I also draw inspiration from elements of Impressionism and Surrealism. Those are two movements in art that captivate me. The theme of my work revolved around the contrast between humans and nature. This influenced the subject matter, texture, color, shadow and materials of my work.”

Peralta had a pastel on paper collection titled “City Series.” He also had a watercolor painting, “Obama V,” an American flag with President Obama on the front and a member of the Anonymous group to the side.

Peralta’s exhibit included pieces of earthenware clay and masks. A clay work, “Mask,” resembled a ram-like animal, complete with bared teeth and glowing eyes.

“My inspirations come from where I am, which is New York City,” Peralta said. “Many of my pieces revolve around the many different perspectives the city has and how each has impacted me. Artists like Banksy, Picasso, Basquiat and even Van Gogh have inspired me to create art.”

Artist-in-residence Anne Mormile emphasized the amount of work that goes into the creation of a senior exhibit, as well as the success of the show.

“Marc and Meghan worked so hard on the exhibition,” Mormile said. “I’m so glad to have seen them pull it all together. We raised around $150 I think, which Meghan and Marc may actually split between the Warming House and buying art supplies for an upcoming art student here at SBU.”

The exhibit remains on display in Francis Hall until May 1.
