With the semester nearing the halfway point, students said they are getting ready to hit the books to cram for midterm exams.
Students said that midterms week can be a stressful time. Joel Gopurathingal, a freshman management major, has never taken a collegiate midterm before and is anxious about what to expect.
“This is my first time taking midterms, and I’m a little nervous because I’m not the best test taker,” said Gopurathingal. “I’m mainly worried about passing and just hope that I get a good grade.”
Returning students said they are more familiar with midterms. They’ve been through the process and generally know what to expect.
Upperclassmen said the anxiety comes from the possibility that they might not do as well as they hope.
Jolene Johnson, a junior elementary special education major, said she knows this feeling all too well.
“There was one time that I thought that I did better than I really did, which was kind of a bummer,” said Johnson. “Thankfully, the class worked out in the end.”
Others have found themselves in a crisis that has left them scrambling at the last minute.
“My professor did not email my class the readings that we needed to know until the day before the test,” said Madeleine Feddern, a sophomore education major. “He ended up curving everyone’s grades by 30 points because we all did so badly.”
Travis Barber, a junior psychology major, has also experienced a midterm crisis.
“Freshman year, I forgot that we even had a midterm for one of the classes that I was taking,” said Barber. “I figured out that we had one the night before the test, so I panicked and stayed up the night before cramming. I ended up getting a decent grade, even though I didn’t do as well as I had hoped.”
The good news is that there is still time before midterms—but not much. Students said that they are trying their best to prepare so that they can earn good grades.
