The men’s soccer team is now more than halfway through its conference games, and they are now 2-13-1 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

Wednesday afternoon, the Bonnies broke a 14-game winless streak when they beat the George Washington University Colonials 2-1.

The Bonnies have had trouble scoring this season, but in the past three games, the team has finally started to see goal totals on their side of the scoreboard other than zero.

Senior midfielder Jimmy Barrios, scoring his first goal of the season, broke the Bonnies’ seven-game scoreless streak during a losing effort against the Davidson University Wildcats last weekend. The Bonnies’ offensive production continued into the following game against the University of Massachusetts Minutemen. This time, it was freshman Kosi Nwafornso, scoring his second goal of the year, who led the Bonnies.

Nwafornso continued his hot streak, scoring both of the goals for the Bonnies in their first conference win of the season. Coach Kwame Oduro feels Nwafornso’s hard work of late and his timing have led to his recent offensive success.

“He is working hard at practice each day, and he was at the right place at the right time.” Oduro said.

Oduro praised his team for its efforts as of late as well its teamwork.

“Hard work and camaraderie goes a long way,” Oduro said. “We worked hard defensively and finished our few chances. Defending well leads to better attacking chances. Scoring is an attitude, and in the last few games, we look like we wanted to score goals.”

Prior to Wednesday’s game against the George Washington University Colonials, freshman Anthony Sileo said he is happy with his team’s recent offensive success but feels the team is costing themselves itself games.

“In the past couple games, it’s been great to see the team put together some goals,” Sileo said. “But on the other end, we’re giving up silly ones. These include set piece goals, counter attacks, and silly fouls that lead to goals. The team needs to continue to score without conceding silly goals in the back. If we keep up our recent form including these two close losses, we should be able to grab a couple of games in conference play.”

With only one win during conference play, the Bonnies’ goal of reaching the Atlantic 10 playoffs seem difficult to reach, but it is still possible for the team to grab one of the top eight seeds. Even though it may be difficult, Sileo says past tense that the team’s leadership refuses to allow anyone to give up.

“This team is led by a strong group of seniors who won’t quit until the final game is over,” Sileo said.

The Bonnies only have one game this week. They play at Duquesne this Saturday at 7 p.m.
