The Career and Professional Readiness Center (CPRC) hosted its annual Internship Summit on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The event featured a keynote speaker, recognized the winners of the Intern Spotlight competition and provided students with networking and self-awareness information.
The CPRC recognized the Intern Spotlight winners, including Emily Rosman, an intern at ABC’s “The Chew,”;Adelyn Graf, coordinator for the Newport Gulls baseball team; Brandi Mapson, assistant at the Bronx Supreme Court; Lauren Hill, intern at Nestle Waters North America; and Andrew Bevevino, intern at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, for the internships they obtained. They explained what they did at their internships and how they got them.
Keynote speaker Edward Bysiek, BYSIEK CPA, PLLC, talked about what he looks for in a successful, qualified candidate in an internship experience.
Bysiek said he wants applicants who are conversational while interviewing and do not rush the interviewing process.
Pamela Ferman, assistant director for the CPRC, said it really motivates students to see how great these internship experiences can be.
“We have students who have interned at The White House, ABC’s “The Chew” and the Bronx Supreme Court,” said Ferman. “The program not only benefits current students but also prospective students by showing them they could get great internships if attending Bona’s.”
Sabrina Basile, a freshman biology major, said she enjoyed seeing other students’ experiences and found it inspiring. She said she wished there were students who had biology research internships there, since she is a biology major and felt a bit underrepresented.
PJ Neubauer, a freshman sports studies major and attendee of the event, said the summit was a good learning experience.
“Having the spotlight interns speak at the seminar shows that St. Bonaventure cares about our professional development and likes to show off individuals who valued their experiences,” said Neubauer.
Ferman said it is important for students to begin preparing for internships, and applicants with two or more internship experiences are more likely to be hired.
“I learned that resume building can start as soon as freshman year, and it is important to start now in order to be more qualified in the future,” said Neubaur.
