The St. Bonaventure women’s team started its season with a 57-40 win in the Reilly Center tonight against the Siena College Saints in the first round of Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).

Sophomore forward Miranda Drummond came out firing, scoring the Bonnies’ first points of the 2015-2016 season. With a team high in the first half was senior forward Katie Healy with 12 points and six total rebounds.

The ball was just not falling for the Bonnies in the first half, going 10 for 27 (about 30 percent) from the field and one for six from beyond the arc. Along with the ball just not falling, the team got into foul trouble in the first half with 11 team fouls. The Bonnies surged together at the end of the second quarter to take a 26-21 lead over the Saints.

The baskets started to fall as they continued their surge out of half, with a seven-to-zero run on the Saints. Continuing that throughout the rest of the game, the Bonnies found their groove, breaking out to a commanding lead in the second half. Two high scorers for the Bonnies were senior forward Katie Healy with 15 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore forward Miranda Drummond with 15 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Head Coach Jim Crowley believes teamwork was the key to the women’s successful defense, he said in the post-game press conference.

“It’s hard to stick to things defensively especially when shots aren’t going down,” said Head Coach Jim Crowley “For us teamwork is vital on defense because you have to trust your teammates…”

The Bonnies will continue onto the second round of the WNIT, and they will play the winner of DePaul and Southern Illinois on Sunday, with a time yet to be determined.
