Members of Student Government Association (SGA) heard proposals for a new primary charity at its meeting on Nov. 12.
According to senior marketing and political science major and SGA member Michael Padlo, six new charity organization proposals were brought forth at the meeting, including Goin’ Bald for Bucks, Miracle Network Hospitals, Embrace it Africa, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Team IMPACT and Special Olympics of New York.
Anneliese Quinlan, junior political science major and member of SGA, said SGA moved to change the primary charity from March of Dimes after lackluster participation in events sponsoring the charity.
“This year [at] the March of Dimes event we had didn’t really have a lot of student involvement,” said Quinlan. “There was also a club or two that didn’t support the charity itself, so I think that did play into the lack of student involvement [for March of Dimes].”
Quinlan also noted SGA has been working with March of Dimes for several years.
“[March of Dimes] was passed down to SGA. The Bona’s community has been doing this for years. It may just be time for a change,” she said.
Quinlan added SGA will begin fundraising for whatever new charitable organization they vote for during the fall semester next year.
“I’m assuming it will be around next fall since that’s when we typically have our March of Dimes event,” said Quinlan. “Although some of the national charities have their own timetables for when they want certain fundraisers to happen.”
Padlo said members of SGA will vote to decide the new major charity on Tuesday.
“Voting members include all Senators at Large, representatives of the Big Four clubs, the MERT representative and the presidents and secretaries of the freshman through senior classes,” said Padlo.
If there is a tie in voting, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Trish Gould, senior accounting major, will cast the deciding vote, according to Padlo.
“I think I can speak on behalf of the entire Student Government Association when I say that every proposal we heard was extremely well done, and each of these charities are very special,” said Padlo.
