Sophomore guard Jaylen Adams led the way for the Bonnies Tuesday night, as they defeated Vermont 80-68.
Adams scored a career-high 28 points on the strength of his seven three-point shots. Senior forward Dion Wright added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
“I thought Jay was terrific, especially in the second half,” Head Coach Mark Schmidt said.
The coach from Vermont agreed with Schmidt.
“[We] couldn’t guard the Adams kid,” Vermont Head Coach John Becker said.
The Bonnies entered halftime nursing a six-point lead, and early in the second half, the Catamounts tied the game at 45. From that point, it was all St. Bonaventure, as the Bonnies outscored Vermont 35-23 to close out the game.
In the second half, the Bonnies shot over 60 percent from the field while the Catamounts managed only 50 percent. St. Bonaventure capitalized on transition opportunities, scoring 14 fast-break points.
“No one really played well in the first half. . . then we started playing,” Schmidt said.
Marcus Posley struggled for the Bonnies, scoring eight points and going 2-10 from the field. But Adams picked up the slack, and freshman guard Nelson Kaputo added six points in the winning effort.
“We have a bunch of capable scorers, so we kind of just feed the hot hand,” Adams said.
St. Bonaventure has now won five of its last six games, including the last three.
The Bonnies return to action Dec. 19 when they host South Carolina State University at 2 p.m.
