We live in a digital age. This is a reality that The Bona Venture hasn’t taken advantage of enough.
As we usher in a new semester, preparing to spend late nights in the newsroom, the quality of our print publication will continue to be a priority. However, our digital presence will no longer be a second thought.
I’m thrilled to have the honor of leading a staff of excellent journalists. With that honor, as one of my heroes, Stan Lee, would say, comes great responsibility. The Bona Venture will not only continue to strive to produce an informative and entertaining publication, but, as editor-in-chief, I hold the task of pushing my staff to be their best—even on days they’re exhausted. Often BV staffers aren’t thought of as full-time students first. We forget the hours they put in for classes, studying and homework—not to mention activities and sports that each of them is involved in outside of the newsroom.
So, with this hardworking staff, The Bona Venture will bring itself into the digital sphere by amping up our presence on social media, giving our website a facelift and keeping our stories relevant by getting them online first. I’m proud to say that we broke the story of Sr. Margaret Carney’s departure—thanks to Twitter and a speedy writer. This is just the beginning of our efforts.
With saying that also comes our commitment to accuracy. If something is wrong or you want to see coverage on a particular subject, let us know. Tweet at us, email us, comment on our website or Facebook. We will listen.
Writing this welcome is a self-reflective experience for me. As a freshman, I was brought onto the editorial board as the assistant news editor during my first week of school. I was thrust into journalism, and I’m grateful that experience was through The Bona Venture. I’ve made some of the best memories of my college career with these people late on Wednesday nights. Despite the impending exhaustion Thursday brings, we play music and laugh together.
The paper has been a source of growth for me, among so many other things. I’m proud to be the editor this semester, allowing other young writers to grow and develop a love for the craft as previous editors have done for me. You’ll know who these students are. They’re going to remember their BV experience as they launch their careers. They’re asking questions about everything—just in case there’s a story behind it. And they’re gripping their coffee on Thursdays, but they know they’ll be back in the newsroom next Wednesday.
