After losing three consecutive conference games, the men’s basketball team found a way to stop the bleeding and pick up a home win on Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies defeated the Richmond Spiders by a score of 84-68 at the Reilly Center.
Marcus Posley led St. Bonaventure in scoring with 26 points and six assists while Dion Wright pitched in with a double double, 19 points and 14 rebounds.
The Bonnies trailed by six points at halftime, but thanks to some hot shooting, St. Bonaventure put up 51 points in the second half, which ended up being too much for the Spiders.
Richmond came into the game as one of the highest scoring teams in the Atlantic 10, but Head Coach Mark Schmidt explained why his defense was so successful, especially in the second half.
“We played more zone in the second half and part of us playing more zone was because we were scoring,” Schmidt said. “When you score, that allows you to set up your defense and when you aren’t scoring, you have to get back and they can attack you.”
Even when the Bonnies started to pull away in the second half, the team understood that they couldn’t afford to let up, according to Posley.
“We didn’t want to let up our pressure,” Posley said. “We knew eventually that the three games they had in that span would catch up to them. We had a whole week to prepare for them.”
The win improves the Bonnies record to 13-6 overall (5-3 in the A-10), which is good for a tie in fourth place with the George Washington Colonials.
Next up for St. Bonaventure is a trip to Philadelphia to take on the Saint Joseph’s Hawks Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
