The Bonnies continue their undefeated home winning streak (13) by defeating the Richmond Spiders, 66 -43.
The Bonnies trailed by four early, but with good defense and turnovers they fought their way back to the lead. This was the last time the team trailed in the game. The Bonnies and Spiders both struggled in the second quarter, going almost five minutes without a basket, until sophomore forward Matea Britvar broke that streak with a mid-range jumper to extend their lead to 33-17.
Controlling the second half, the Bonnies as they extended their lead to as much as 30 points. The Bonnies leading scorer for the game was senior forward Katie Healy with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Bonnies shot 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from three- point land.
“I liked our response, they came out and shot the ball very well and gained a 12-10 lead, we really locked down after that, really good effort team wise,” head coach Jim Crowley said.
Sophomore guard Mariah Ruff was a key to the Bonnies defense as she locked in on Richmond’s Janelle Hubbard after she sank a three to open the game.
“Obviously she’s a great player and she has a really quick pull,” Ruff said. “My teammates helped me out, they were there for every step. We team defended really well.”
The Bonnies forced the Spiders to shoot from the outside and eliminated the inside play.
“We try to get in gaps, force turnovers and force them to shoot the contested shots outside,” Healy said.
The Bonnies are 19-3 on the season and 8-1 in conference play. They will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University on Wednesday to take on the Rams. Tip will be at 7 p.m.
