Last week’s fire at Emerald Hills Apartment in Allegany displaced 15 residents, according to Gordon Scott, communications and media relations officer for the Allegany Fire Department.
The fire, which started at 11:39 p.m. on Feb. 3, was not an act of arson.
“The only thing the chief told me was that it was ruled accidental, which means it wasn’t an arson,” Scott said.
Fifteen residents of one building in the Emerald Hills complex were displaced in the fire, including at least one five-person family, according to Scott. He was unsure if the other displaced residents were single or families. The building was completely engulfed and is considered a “total loss.”
Between 90 and 100 personnel responded to the blaze, from Hinsdale, Town of Olean, Limestone, Knapp Creek and Westons Mills.
Scott said the fire flared up again on Feb. 4.
“There was a rekindle Thursday,” he said. “We were on scene for about 25 minutes.”
He said the fire restarted after insulation on the roof was fanned by wind.
