The win against Saint Louis also brought funding towards raising awareness for breast cancer.
“The Pink Game is a game that is used to raise awareness for specifically breast cancer,” said Seth Johnson, director of marketing and promotions. “We use it as a way to celebrate survival of all forms of cancer to raise money for the Olean General Hospital and their fight against cancer.”
All of the women’s basketball players wore pink uniforms in support of breast cancer. The Bonnies offered free admission to all survivors of the disease. All cancer survivors and their family members were also invited to the Hall of Fame Room from 6 to 7 p.m. for a reception during the game. Johnson did not know if the uniforms would be used again.
“There is no national organization because we want to keep the funds local,” Johnson said. “We choose to run ours ourselves so that we can make sure it benefits people here in our community.”
Paul Brown Motors sponsored the event in partnership with the Athletic Department to benefit Olean General Hospital’s efforts to upgrade radiation machines, said Johnson.
About 900 people showed up at the event, with two dollars for every ticket sold and five dollars for every shirt sold being donated. There was also a report of two donors who donated about $500 dollars each towards the cause, raising about $3000 total in donations, according to Johnson
Were it not for the cold weather, about 500 to 600 people more would have shown up, according to Johnson. He said, however, that he hopes next year they’ll be able to do the event on a weekend instead of a weekday.
