All of the pressure was on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. The Saint Louis Billikens had nothing to play for except spoiler and trying to burst the Bonnies tournament bubble. However, the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team closed out the regular season in, style picking up a road win over the Billikens 76-67.
St. Bonaventure 22-7 (14-4) will be the number three seed in the A10 conference tournament next week and the Bonnies finished the season as co-champions of the league with VCU and Dayton who also finished with a 14-4 conference record.
Sophomore guard Jaylen Adams led the Bonnies with 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Marcus Posley was next with 18 points, followed by fellow senior Dion Wright with 16 points. Forward Reggie Agbeko led the Billikens with 20 points and 16 rebounds.
The Bonnies have been the hottest team in the Atlantic 10 in the last month winning 10 of their last 11 games while climbing up from the middle of the pack, to a share of the regular season conference title.
Next up for the Bonnies is the Atlantic 10 tournament in Brooklyn, where they will get two byes—meaning they won’t play until Friday night in the quarterfinals at 9 p.m. at the Barclays Center.
St. Bonaventure has a chance to become the first Bonnies team to make the NCAA tournament as an at-large team since the 2000 season. The quest continues Friday night in Brooklyn.
