Agape Latte held its first club meeting Tuesday, drawing over 100 students for a night of faith and coffee.
Natalie Wasek, sophomore accounting major and club leader of Agape Latte, said it’s purpose is to learn more about faith and religion in an inviting social environment. Wasek said the club began at Boston College in 2006. Three St. Bonaventure students, including Wasek, attended a faith conference at Boston College in November and decided to bring the club to campus.
“Through [Boston College] and with all of their help and support, we are lucky enough to bring it to our campus this semester,” Wasek said.
Wasek said the club is starting by hosting two events each semester and hopes to make it a monthly meeting.
“We are trying to make sure that this event is open for all students and faculty on campus and make it a welcoming and comfortable environment,” Wasek said. “It’s not just another ‘club’ on campus. It’s a place where people can go and share faith in a non-religious setting.”
Laurie Anne Wickens, junior marketing major and club volunteer, said she was pleased with the group’s turnout.
“I thought the event was wonderful,” Wickens said. “There was a great turnout, awesome music, a wonderful speaker and of course, lots of coffee. I am so happy that the first Agape Latte went so well.”
The meeting began with students mingling over coffee and desserts while listening to the student band, the Heart and the Hill. Wasek explained the mission of Agape Latte, followed by the main speaker Chris Brown, director of first-year experience.
Wickens said she enjoyed the meeting.
“I loved it all,” Wickens said. “If I had to pick a favorite part, it would be Chris Brown’s talk though. It was phenomenal.”
Wickens said Brown talked about coming out, what that experience was like for him and how he embraces his flaws.
Agape Latte will host an event in April.
