Since spring is fast approaching, it’s time to let go of the old and make way for the new, particularly with our wardrobes. It may seem difficult at first, as many fall into a forgetful slump or develop an attachment to torn or faded favorites, but there is always room for new replacements.
Cleanse your closet using these tips and enjoy the perks of letting go.
Search:
Go through your wardrobe, keeping in mind these three categories: love and hate, want and need, and old and unused. Select items from each category and create a large pile.
Keepsakes:
Be realistic with yourself as you go through the large pile of items. As you evaluate your pile, ask yourself: Do I need this? Is this easily paired with something? Will I ever wear this again? If the answer is yes, then keep it.
Make sure to keep all of the casual and formal basics that will never go out of style, including plain T-shirts, jeans and suits. Also, keep items a few sizes below and above your current size, in case your body changes later in the year.
Separate:
Separate the items into the following piles: keep, trash, donate and sell. If there are items you are still unsure about, leave them in a separate pile to go through once more. For the items that you intend to keep, separate them according to season. Since spring is approaching, pack all your winter and fall clothing in separate bins, dedicating a separate bin to clothing, shoes and accessories.
Eliminate:
Dispose items that are outdated, ill-fitting and items plagued with holes, bleach stains and dull colors.
Donate:
If you’d really like to make a difference and br ing a smile to the face of someone less fortunate, donate some of your clothing to a local homeless shelter or The Salvation Army.
Sell:
Websites like Etsy.com and popular apps like Depop, Vinted and Poshmark allow you to be your own entrepreneur by giving you the power to create a personal smartphone shop. Not only can you buy unique items, but you can also make a quick buck by selling your clothing or save big by swapping items with fellow users.
