During the SGA presidential debate on Tuesday, March 29, Noah Burton introduced the possibility of having an all-night dining place on-campus.
Amy Vleminckx, the general manager of Aramark, said, after reviewing with the university, that the costs would be determined after the feasibility study is completed and a business plan developed.
“Currently, there is not enough support for the late night options that are open,” said Vleminckx. “Customer counts and sales are quite low in existing locations such as Café La Verna and the Rathskellar, which are open until 2 a.m.”
Caty Lee, a junior English major, said it is irrational for the workers to be running an all-night food place.
“It seems unnecessary, because the dining hall is open all day and if needed, students can leave campus to get food,” said Lee. “They can also pack food like oranges and bananas to put in their refrigerators for later.”
Vleminckx also said contracts would have to be amended if the proposal went through.
“The cost of operating such a location would have to be considered and also a location decided upon to offer this service,” said Vleminckx. “Staffing an all-night location could also be a challenge.”
She did not provide statistics of the costs of operating an all-night food place.
John Nitka, a freshman philosophy major, said the university could be spending its money on other campus-related activities to help out the community.
“There are so many other things that the money could be spent on that the university should be doing, like funding for clubs like Chatterton’s, The Bona Venture, CAB and the intramural sports,” said Nitka. “The university should fund clubs to foster new communities so that way students can start doing new and interesting things.”
