The theme for this year’s Spring Weekend: the carnival.
Abby Cohen, associate director for intramurals, club sports and student engagement, said this means more inflatables and games.
“(We’ll have games) such as skee ball and plinko as opposed to just the bull,” Cohen said. “Some new things to get excited about. I think students will still find their staples and favorites along with new and exciting things.”
Also new to this year’s Spring Weekend, the festivities will launch on Thursday night instead of Friday afternoon.
According to Cohen, Campus Activities Board (CAB) will team up with Embrace it Africa and Rotaract to throw back Thursday to the 1990s. Rotaract is a student club, aiming to help its local community and develop students’ leadership and professional skills. The Rathskellar will be “da bomb” with a 90s band, old video game consoles and trivia. Students will pay a cover fee of $3, and all proceeds will go to Embrace it Africa, a campus club dedicated to helping communities in southern Uganda. Doors open at 8 p.m.
On April 29 and April 30, campus activities will take place during the day on the outdoor basketball courts between the Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center and Reilly Center Arena.
The annual kickball tournament will take place on both days.
CAB spent about $30,000 on this year’s Spring Weekend activities, according to Cohen. She said last year, when all was said and done, they spent about $28,000.
On April 29 from 4 to 8 p.m., DJ Ran Kan along with WSBU-FM 88.3 The Buzz will take the stage on the outdoor basketball courts. During this time there will also be free airbrush hats for the first 200 attendees, an obstacle course, inflatables and, of course, food.
Students can make their way to the Rathskellar at 8 p.m. for more food and a T-shirt giveaway. The Rathskellar will be open for its normal hours, until 2 a.m., but Cohen said the free food probably won’t last long.
CAB ordered 250 T-shirts to give away both Friday and Saturday nights.
On April 30 at 11 a.m., WSBU-FM 88.3 The Buzz will start the party with some tunes. At 1:30 p.m., Sticks will take the stage, singing as well as drumming. From 4 to 5:30 p.m., Gary Johnson, a one-man band, will make his second annual Spring Weekend. Johnson will perform based on students’ texted song requests. DJ Kyle Trietley, a junior journalism and mass communication major, will close out the day-time events from 6 to 8 p.m.
A caricature artist will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Twister, plinko and skee ball will be up from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Cohen said the kickball registration sheet is up on my.sbu.edu. At least one person from each team needs to officially register the team on April 19 and pay the $40 registration fee.
At 8 p.m., once again CAB will have food available in the Rathsellar and will give away T-shirts.
Cody Didas, senior finance major and president of the Campus Activities Board (CAB), said CAB does its best to bring in entertainment that will satisfy the most people on campus.
“I hope that students look at Spring Weekend as the best weekend on campus every year,” he said. “It has given me some of my greatest memories of my undergraduate time here at Bona’s, and I want to be able to provide that to everyone on campus.”
