On Feb. 17, the St. Bonaventure University men’s tennis team fell to Youngstown State 5-2. The Bonnies were able to win 2 of the singles matches, and Youngstown State took the other five scoring opportunities.
The spring season had begun well for the Bonnies (3-5), winning 3 out of the first 4 matches, according to gobonnies.sbu.edu. However, since the calendar turned to February, they have lost 4 in a row.
Junior Hector Martinez won in his singles match 7-6, 7-6, against freshman Thomas Rodrigues. Freshman Indra Patwardhan picked up the other Bonnies win, 7-5, 7-5, beating junior Gabriel Tolesani in singles play.
In the remaining singles matches, the Bonnies came up short against the Penguins (7-4). Junior Victor Blanco was defeated by Mitch Maroscher, 6-1, 6-3, while freshman Guillermo Garcia was dropped by freshman Joao Garetto, 6-2, 6-1, and freshman John Rutkowski lost to sophomore Luke Purser, 6-2, 6-2. Finally, freshman Lukas Linden Malmberg fell to fellow freshman Alonso Lauz, 3-6, 7-6, 10-7.
In doubles, the Bonnies came up short as well. Martinez and Garcia fell to Garetto and senior Matthew Kritzinger, by a score of 6-2. Malmberg and Rutkowski fell to Purser and Tolesani 6-3 in their doubles match.
The Bonnies next hit the court on Feb. 25 at 10 a.m., when they will host Binghamton University at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center.
