Starting today, Spring Weekend at St. Bonaventure University promises to have activities and events that will be different from those of previous years. Robbie Chulick, the assistant director of the Center for Activities, Recreation and Leadership, and the Campus Activities Board (CAB) have spent months planning this stress-relieving weekend before finals week.
Activities commence at 2 p.m. Bona’s will have a music lineup featuring DJ Bad Weekend, known for his routine appearances at Allegany’s The Burton bar, at 4 p.m. Imani Outlaw, a graduate student, will DJ at 6 p.m. Games for the annual kickball tournament will also begin today. A Price It Right game show will round out tonight’s programming at 9 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
Saturday’s programming will welcome artists such as Matt Beillis and Gary Johnson.
In addition to these performers, the SBU Step Team, Sung Beats (a beat boxer) and 88.3 FM WSBU’s The Buzz’s board of directors will provide entertainment and music to students, alongside human caricatures, large-scale inflatables and other novelties.
Dana Porzio, a sophomore elementary education major and CAB secretary, said she enjoyed every minute of last year’s events.
“It was one, last chance to relax and laugh with my friends before finals,” Porzio said. “Getting our caricatures done and photos in the photo booth were a fun way to remember the weekend.”
Porzio added that there will also be a mechanical bull, inflatable wrecking ball, mini golf, an inflatable obstacle course, sumo wrestling and bingo over the course of the weekend.
The weekend’s programming will end with a silent disco on the Richter Center’s outdoor basketball courts, beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday and ending at 12 a.m.
According to Porzio, the disco will be a new, exciting opportunity for students and she said they should give it a chance.
“A silent disco is an event that has multiple DJs playing music,” Porzio said. “Each DJ has a set of headphones that is connected to their playlists and students will be able to select which DJ and genre they would like to listen to.”
Porzio thinks students should give the silent disco a chance because CAB hasn’t done an event like this on campus yet. She is excited to see how it goes.
“You never know if you don’t try,” she said.
Jason Caldwell, a junior business management major and the interactive committee co-chair of CAB, has participated in two Spring Weekends, thus far. Caldwell said that it’s nice to see everyone else have fun being out and about on campus.
This year, Spring Weekend will have increased security and Caldwell believes students will be safe while participating in activities.
“CAB has planned some exciting activities that I feel should draw a crowd,” Caldwell said. “We carefully chose the timing for our bigger events and the allure of prizes is always a factor, as well.”
Caldwell agreed with Porzio, saying the silent disco should be interesting and fun.
The CAB executive board members hope students will enjoy their Spring Weekend and the members will continue to work hard planning next year’s programming.
“We hope that everyone has a great time and makes some fun memories of his or her time at college,” Caldwell said.
