Kesha likes to have fun while also learning to grow as a person. In her latest song “High Road,” she describes how she wants to live carefree, not listening to what her haters say about her.
Kesha, formerly known as Ke$ha, introduced herself as a pop singer that relied heavily on autotune. Since her days of “TikTok,” “We R Who We R” and “Die Young,” she has grown musically and lyrically as an artist.
“Praying,” which came out in 2017, was the introduction on what her talents consist of. “High Road” is made of the vocals of “Praying,” but has the same catchiness of her earlier songs.
The song starts with an uplifting chorus with techno beats with the opening line “I’m taking the high road,” demonstrating her singing abilities by holding notes similar to those in “Praying.”
The first verse highlights how she feels about her haters. The line “Y’all think I’m crazy, think I’m dumb, could a b***h this dumb write a number one,” proves that although people love to hate her, she is still making hit songs.
In verse two, she opens up about ways she has been trying to better herself mentally. “A girl like me try to take the high road, been meditating, transcendental,” is a line mixed with lighthearted lyrics but shows how she is trying to overcome issues.
Kesha has experienced many conflicts and personal struggles. In 2014, she went to rehab for bulimia nervosa and in the same year, she sued then producer for Sony Dr. Luke for several charges. The lawsuit against Dr. Luke included charges of alleged sexual assault, sexual harrassment, gender violence, civil harrassment, violation of unfair business laws, infliction of emotional distress (both intentional and negligent) and negligent retention and supervision.
Margaret DeMarco, a sophomore marketing major, said “I feel like she is trying to do something really different than her old music.”
Although she is still a pop artist, there is a noticeable change in her music from her early years compared to now.
“I feel like she is targeting her music towards younger people,” said DeMarco.
Kesha is notorious for appealing to a younger audience in her catchy beats and fun lyrics, however, she also has deeper messages to relate to more of an older population.
