People say fashion is ever-changing, but is it really? Usually, fashion trends cycle through time, with each style coming back every few decades. Take the mom jean, for example. Teenagers and young adults were sporting the denim trend for a couple of years back in the 2018-19 season. The jeans were originally considered fashionable in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but even then, they were thought of as uncool to the younger population.
Despite the seemingly never-ending circulation of trends, this spring’s fashion is set to be unexpected and something that hasn’t been seen before.
On the rise this spring, are vivid neon colors. Fashion designer, Valentino, made this statement in his Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Although this line opens with a series of all-white looks, it swiftly elevates to bright lime greens, fuchsia pinks and electric oranges and cyans.
Neon’s first headway into the fashion industry started back in the 1980s. It is said that the popular vibrant colors came from entertainment since Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies included flashy colors and wild patterns that had not been seen before.
Next in the line-up for upcoming fashion are short suits. As a modern twist on the usual formal wear, the suit allows the everyday businessperson to elevate the traditional attire. Instead of having straight-cut dress pants, the bottoms are trouser-like shorts that hit just below the knee.
Short suits date quite a while back in history. Usually worn by men between the 16th and 19th centuries, the suits were then called breeches. It was later, in the 1800s, where breeches were updated and became the trousers that are worn in business wear today.
Big-name companies, like Givenchy and Max Marra, are including this old trend into their spring clothing lines to suit today’s working class in a warmer climate. The slick shorts are a perfect addition to a wardrobe, especially if someone wanted to make a fashion statement in the office.
Another upcoming spring trend that never seems to go away is the trench coat. The coat is the perfect outerwear selection because of its versatility and its ability to complement any outfit.
The trench coat’s popularity dates back to the 1960s. People fell in love with its style and fell for it, even more, when the coat was featured at the end of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” where Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard share an intimate kiss in the rain.
Now, fashion companies, like Balenciaga, are bringing the dependable coat back and incorporating a vast array of new colors onto its palette to attract their customers.
Trends and fads come in and out of people’s lives almost every day with almost everything that they use. This is no different from fashion. Fashion is ever-changing, but although people may believe they are wearing something completely new and never-before-seen, it’s possible that they are wearing a piece that was popular in the 1900s.
