Two weeks ago St. Bonaventure University’s men’s basketball program had three scholarships to fill for the 2020-2021 season.
On Monday, the Bonnies landed their third recruit with the commitment of Kent State University transfer Anthony Roberts.
“It was a no brainer,” Roberts said.
When Roberts announced that he was entering the transfer portal on March 23rd, his top two offers were from St. Bonaventure and Arizona State.
Roberts visited campus when he was recruited by Bonaventure in high school when he was at Henry Ford High School in Detroit, Michigan.
“That’s my guy,” he said of head coach Mike Schmidt.
Roberts said that Schmidt told him that he has “got a great chance of being a pro” if he came to St. Bonaventure.
Roberts has yet to talk to any of Bonaventure’s players, but he did say he knows Jaren English since they’re both from the Detroit area.
Roberts, who was offered by Bonaventure out of high school, spent the last two years playing at Kent State.
Roberts averaged 5.9 points-per-game over his freshman year. He shot a 43% from the field and 29% from three. In his sophomore year, he improved drastically, improving to 44% shooting, 36% from three, and averaged 12.7 points-per-game
“I’m a playmaker and scorer,” Roberts said. “Expect a lot of excitement and energy.”
When Roberts announced his commitment on Monday it was the third and final scholarship the program could give out for the 2020-21 year. That quickly changed when 2023 forward Robert Carpenter announced he would enter the transfer portal on Tuesday.
When Carpenter committed in February 2019, he had additional offers from St. Louis, Iona, Tulane, UMass, Temple, and others.
In 14 games as a freshman for the Bonnies, Carpenter went seven-for-19 from the field, avergining just 1.1 points-per-game.
Most of Carpenter’s playing time was when teammate Osun Osunniyi was out with an injury. There were only two games this season that both Osunniyi and Carpenter played over five minutes together.
