St. Bonaventure sophomore forward Justin Winston has announced his intention to transfer, effective immediately.

In a statement, head coach Mark Schmidt said, “We are disappointed that Justin has made this decision, but we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Winston arrived at St. Bonaventure as one of the most highly rated recruits out of high school. He quickly made an impact, starting 28 of the Bonnies 31 games in his freshman year. He averaged 8.7 points-per-game and 3.4 rebounds-per-game in 20.2 minutes-per-game.

Entering the 2020-21 season, Winston’s minutes quickly diminished due to the arrival of Jalen Adaway. Adaway quickly stole his starting role, as he’s averaged 27 minutes between the first two games.

Winston has only played 18 minutes over the first two games. He shot two-for-seven in just 13 minutes of play against Hofstra on Dec. 19.

Coming into St. Bonaventure, Winston had many high-end offers, including UConn, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Seton Hall, Rutgers, DePaul, St. Joe’s and UMass.

Depending on how quickly Winston selects his next landing spot, he would be eligible to return to the floor without an NCAA waiver in the second half of the 2021-22 season.

Winston has not announced the intention to transfer publicly yet.

Additional Coach Schmidt comments to come soon.

This is a developing story.
